Is there a downside to building too many houses? Ask Question Asked 8 years ago. Buildings of various types will need to be constructed to provide them with their 'intangible' needs, and production chains will have to be large enough to meet their need for goods and food. In Anno 1404, is there any way to automate swapping resources.

The digit sum of each year is always 9 (e. 1+4+0+4 = 9). I have always had problems in my first Island per game. I use to build some of the production things I need in the island, specially the hard ones which require many materials to build.
I do it partly because it is helpful at the beginning and sometimes my island has rare resources. Moreover, moving all the building materials to a remote island can be hard.I'm planning on expanding my first big populated island to have enough space for a Palace and some more districts. The thing is: I will move most of the production buildings (I'll keep the wine chain, I love the fields around the Palace).
Is it viable not to move the factories? Keep the end-production buildings such as the Bakery in the case of bread (i don't know the name of most buildings in English, hope you understand what i mean) and supply the island with raw materials instead of 'consumer products'. Is it a good idea and does it work well in the game?
I like how some of those buildings look and want to put them into the city, so I'm waiting for opinions. You can certainly break up production chains between islands. Sometimes you even have to, although I don't rememember 1404's production chains very clearly now. But I do remember that in 1701, you need Chocolate, which needs Cocoa from a southern island and Honey from a northern island. So, it is technically possible.
And you can play the game however you like. The reason most people prefer to keep industry away from the main island is because you need all the space you can get for certain conditions, such as settling X Nobles - or whatever the highest tier population is. However, if you are already building a Palace, which takes up a lot of space, I don't think that's the case for you.So, really, there's nothing wrong with not minimaxing everything. Build however you like.
